Parent Programming for 2023-2024
Fall Semester
Hanger Hall Goes to Peru! Please join for an information session with True Nature Travels CEO/Director, Joshua Canter (dad to Jaya ‘25), and Head of School, Jen Schoolfield.
We are thrilled to share that a long-term vision of offering an international travel option for our middle school students is coming to fruition! Hanger Hall is partnering with True Nature Travels and is planning a trip to Peru for the 2024 summer, June 8-June 15. This travel experience will provide students the chance to broaden their horizons and see part of the world that many have never seen before. Guided by the experienced staff of True Nature Travels and in line with Hanger Hall’s motto of challenge by choice, students will expand their horizons and explore new lands. Not only will this trip help enhance our students’ world language skills, but they will also have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Peruvian culture as well as participate in service learning activities while there. Students will likely identify new interests and also make new/fortified friendships. For parents that are also able to attend, we see this as a truly unique opportunity for you to strengthen your relationship with your child while also expanding your own life experience. Spring Semester
The Black Angels: Author Maria Smilios in conversation with Head of School, Jen Schoolfield.
In honor of Black History Month, Hanger Hall will welcome Maria Smilios (mom to Grace ‘25) to Hanger Hall for a book talk. Maria first learned about the Black Angels while working as a science book editor at Springer Publishing. As a native New Yorker and lover of history, medicine, and women’s narratives, she became determined to tell their story. In addition to interviewing historians, archivists, and medical professionals, she spent years immersed in the lives and stories of those close to these extraordinary women. Maria holds a master of arts in religion and literature from Boston University, where she was a Luce scholar and taught in the religion and writing program. In her free time, she enjoys reading, hiking, and hanging out with her tween daughter and their rescue dog, Buddy. The Black Angels is her first book.
Offered in February 2024. Date and time TBD.
Kriya Lendzion presents a Parent Education Workshop, “Not MY Kid: Preventing Substance Abuse.”
Kriya, a long time friend of Hanger Hall and current school counselor at Evergreen, is an Addiction Counselor, Prevention Specialist and Adolescent Therapist. This programming will coincide with her work with Hanger Hall Students throughout the 23-24 school year. Find out current substance use trends among area middle and high schoolers, the newest research about adolescent brains, and how substances impact them. Do you know what molly, Triple C’s, lean, k-pins, robotripping and dabbing are? What are the new versions of the "old stuff?" How "the opiate crisis" is impacting local teens? It's crucial you know more than they do, so come find out! This is strongly recommended particularly for parents of 8th graders.
Offered on March 19, 2024 from 6-7:30pm in the MPR of the Upper Building.
Hanger Hall Book Club Meeting: GROWING UP IN PUBLIC By Devorah Heitner, PhD.
Interested Parents will join together to discuss this informative book at Parent Host’s home.
To continue Hanger Hall’s traditions of annual parent book club gatherings, we have selected Growing Up In Public as our 23-24 Book club read. Growing Up in Public shows parents how to help tweens and teens navigate boundaries, identity, privacy, and reputation in their digital world. With social media and constant connection, the boundaries of privacy are stretched thin. This book has been named The definitive book on helping kids navigate growing up in a world where nearly every moment of their lives can be shared and compared.
Offered in April 2024. Date and Time TBD.
